Did Trump Incite Insurrection?

Did Donald Trump have a decisive role in inciting and fomenting the deadly riot at the U.S. Capitol, in which his supporters smashed doors to gain entry to offices, and coercively occupied the office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives?

Yes. Yes yes yes. Obviously, yes.

Did Trump know he was inciting insurrection? No. For Donald Trump does not know what insurrection means. He does not know what incitement means. He does not understand the limits of authority or free speech, or the responsibility resting on the shoulders of a man in the seat of power. He does not respect the concept of civil society, and does not even know what such a thing would be. He believes everything he does is part of a grand publicity stunt aimed at aggrandizing the name of Trump and bringing adulation from the unwashed masses, or rather audience. For he was nothing, is nothing, and never could be anything, but a conscienceless showman and self-promoter.

If you wish to disagree with anything in the preceding paragraph, even one word of it, you are more than welcome to do so, as long as you are prepared to accept the full consequences of doing so.

The consequences of rejecting my argument for Trump’s basic disconnection from reality or any clear awareness of the meaning of his position and its responsibilities: You must accept the alternative — the only alternative — which is that Donald J. Trump is guilty of knowingly inciting a violent insurrection against the United States Congress, and doing so in a deliberate attempt to usurp the people’s authority for the purpose of ensconcing himself illegally as permanent president, in defiance of the rule of law, the validated and state-approved election results, the U.S. Constitution, and the very notion of a limited, representative government.

Take your pick. Out of pure generosity of spirit, I have chosen madness and gross ignorance. If you prefer treason, you can have it. I will not object too strongly.

By the way, I see that Trump’s most vocal “legal advocate,” Lin Wood, has raised the stakes on his own case for committal to a lunatic asylum, apparently posting these words on the Trump cult’s favorite new social media platform, Parler: “Get the firing squads ready. Pence goes FIRST.” (Parler, to its credit, removed the post.)

Trump could have ended all of this on November 3rd. In fact, none of this would be happening at all, had not Trump started it on November 3rd.

Stop making excuses or denying the obvious, my friends. The extent of the damage this grotesque moron has done to his country may be measured in how far rational and decent humans are willing to bend over backwards to avoid facing the fullest, harshest truth of what has been done to them.
