Treason Logic 101

It has been revealed that Viktor Orbán’s foreign minister, Péter Szijjártó, was in regular and surreptitious contact with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, specifically tasked with undermining EU policies toward Vladimir Putin’s regime and feeding inside information about high-level European strategy meetings to the Kremlin. Furthermore, according to prime minister-elect Péter Magyar, in the hours after the Orbán government suffered a crushing electoral defeat, Szijjártó was in the foreign ministry building destroying documents. In short, he had been using his position as one of Orbán’s leading ministers to sell out his country’s national security and the interests of Hungary’s official allies to Putin’s anti-West tyranny.

Now I ask, was Donald Trump’s administration aware, while they were spending more time and high-level manpower campaigning for Orbán’s reelection in Hungary than they have ever spent on an American Republican candidate’s election at home, that a top Orbán minister was actively working to further Russia’s interests against those of the EU and NATO? If they were aware, then we must assume that their unprecedented and breathless attempts to prop up Orbán’s government, right up to the final hours before the election, were made precisely in light of this fact, and therefore that Trump, and by extension the upper echelon of his administration, are, as has long been apparent, effectively agents of Putin, which is to say traitors to their country, and therefore that the United States of America is in a material sense governed from the Kremlin.

If, on the other hand, the Trump administration was not aware of this cozy relationship between Orbán’s regime and Putin’s, then…well, given the absurdity of that suggestion all things considered, it is hardly worth speculating on such an alternative. After all, to entertain the possibility that Trump was so desperate to salvage Orbán’s government from his rival Magyar, a longtime member of Orbán’s own party, for any reason more essential than his and Orbán’s mutual servitude to Putin which Magyar was prominently threatening to expose and reverse, would leave us open to accusations of having lost our Witkoffs.
